March - cumulus You are here: Home Photo gallery Lightning Lightning (1999) December 7, 1999

This was a scary storm. It approached from the W, and was fairly active until it came in range for photography (ofcourse). When it passed over, strong wind gusts occured, sending a cloudburst of rain and hail to the window. Going outside on the balcony, my usual photography location, was not wise. Visibility decreased to about 150m and the precipitation passed nearly horizontally due to strong wind. The window was soaked by rain. Then this CG lightning discharge occured, dead center in my camera view... Thunder followed immediately, as some sort of snapping, crackling sound and some rumble afterwards. There was no big boom. A ribbon effect was clearly visible for the short time the strike lasted. It struck at the border of a crop field and left no visible trace.
