In gallery: Astronomy Moon Lunar eclipse

The moon in the final partial eclipse phase, during the lunar eclipse on November 8, 2003. The moon is now completely in the penumbral region of Earth's shadow; note the darkening at the limb near Mare Crisium. As seen from the moon there, the sun would be a very thin crescent.
