February - halos You are here: Home What's new

To see any new photos, go to the photo page. That page will show you directly which photos have been added and to which galleries (very helpful if you visit this site regularly). A list of general updates follows below:

  • August 25, 2007
Wow, five months went by without updating anything on this site apart from updating the guestbook spam filter.

Last wednesday I finally had the money, time and motivation to process 36 of the 45 rolls that had been accumulating since March in my refridgerator waiting for development. I've had a busy time preparing for my summer research at Langmuir Lab.

During my processing of those 36 rolls of film, Nikon finally came out with news on their full-frame digital D3. I think it is time to switch to digital for my 35mm-photography...

Anyway, except for the photo of the month April, which will follow later, I updated all photos of the month - May (supercell lightning), June (shelfcloud), July (double rainbow) and August (bolt from the blue lightning). The summer of 2007 is being good to me so far photography-wise!

  • March 24, 2007
Added photos of the months November 2006 (twilight wedge), December 2006 (gravity waves), January 2007 (iridescence), February 2007 (stratocumulus) and March 2007 (pollen corona). My apologies that updating the photo of the month took a while!

  • November 27, 2006
Added photo of the month October 2006 (opposition light).

  • October 10, 2006
Added the photos of the months July 2006 (cloud-to-ground lightning), August 2006 (St. Elmo's fire) and September 2006 (Brocken spectre and glory).

  • July 6, 2006
Added the photos of the months February 2006 (Mt. Augustine volcano letting off steam after the January eruptions), March 2006 (Iridescence), April 2006 (Reddened rising moon), May 2006 (Rainbow with lightning) and June 2006 (Low-precipitation supercell near Oshkosh, Nebraska). Unfortunately I could not process films for many months due to my studies and travel; I had to process more than 80 rolls of film early July.

  • February 6, 2006
Added the photos of the months November 2005 (multiple exposure of sun), December 2005 (cumulus mediocris as seen from an airplane) and January 2006 (of the setting sun).

You can now order photos online on this website. Go to the order page to read more about this.

Changed the page width from 640 to 800 pixels.

  • August 6, 2005
Added the photos of the months June, of a red rainbow, and July, of lightning. This year I have had several good storms to photograph already, and the monsoon is just about to start. This is a big change compared to last year!

  • May 31, 2005
Added the photos of the months April and May, both of lightning. Also created a new gallery with spectacular photos of twilight lightning. This year's storm season took off with a good start, and the monsoon hasn't even arrived yet!

  • March 8, 2005
Added photo of the month February 2005, of altocumulus lenticularis.

  • February 13, 2005

I (finally) added a mailing list to the site: from now on you can receive notifications of updates (new photos, new galleries and new sections) by email. You can subscribe here.

I received several inquiries from visitors about whether such a list existed. I hope you will like this feature!

  • February 2, 2005

  • January 26, 2005
Added photo of the month December 2004, of dry heiligenschein photographed from an aircraft.

  • December 24, 2004
Today I must have seen some type of ball lightning or something, together with another person. It materialized in the middle of a room in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There were thunderstorms over the city, and an active storm had just passed. Noisy white sparks suddenly appeared in mid-air in a volume of about 5cm in diameter and the phenomenon, whatever it was, caused the lights in the room to flicker. My camera was ready but it lasted only a fraction of a second and caught me completely off-guard. I did take photos of the room after the incident.

  • December 18, 2004
Added photo of the month November 2004, of a spectacular fogbow.

  • October 21, 2004
Added photos of the months August 2004 (lightning), September 2004 (sunset) and October 2004 (hailstone).

  • October 8, 2004
I haven't had much of a chance to update this site over the past few months, for which I apologize. I didn't stop taking pictures, however! The photos of the months August and September should be online soon. Also, I am now finally accepting orders for photo prints up to about any practical size you like! Prices and details will be on this site soon.

  • October 5, 2004
Today, a major hailstorm hit the town of Socorro, New Mexico (USA), where I live. Hailstones measured up to and over 3" (8 cm) in diameter and caused widespread damage to trees, buildings and cars. I will publish some pictures of the damage and the hailstones themselves sometime in the near future. This storm was an extremely rare, one-in-a-lifetime occurence for this town in New Mexico. Not only was the hail much larger than anybody remembers falling here, there were also lots of large stones falling rather than just a few.

  • July 29, 2004
Added photos of the month for the months May 2004, June 2004 and July 2004. All happen to be digital photos - but I still use slide film!

  • May 27, 2004
Added photo of the month April 2004.

  • April 8, 2004
I finally started translating this whole site in Dutch language, besides the English, because of the significant number of people from my home country who visit my site. I don't know yet how long this will take, since the English language photo database is fairly substantial! I estimate it will take between a few weeks or months.

  • April 4, 2004
Added photo of the month March, of a green flash during sunrise.

  • March 29, 2004
Not so uninteresting weather after all: today my longtime hunt for the superior mirage finally paid off! I went out at 5 in the morning to drive up the Magdalena Mountain Ridge (New Mexico) at 9000 ft to photograph the green flash at the rising sun. There, for a minute, appeared a mountain to the eastern horizon with a very small inverted image. I'm not sure yet if my photos turned out well, since exposure time was rather long and the photos may be blurred. If not, I will be posting them here soon (I hope!).

  • March 2, 2004
Added photo of the month February, of M42, the Orion nebula. Not much interesting weather going on these days!

  • February 29, 2004
I found out, thanks to my sister who pointed it out to me, that most of the banners on the front page don't show up if you're using internet security software, because the word "banner" appears in the graphical image files and it gets filtered out as being commercial advertising! I'm never too old to learn. After renaming some files and folders on the site, it should load fine on those computers well now.

I surely hope those internet security software companies are not going to decide to filter sites containing the word "weather" or "lightning" as well, or I will be in trouble.

  • February 20, 2004

I arrived back in the USA! Now, it's back to school (studying). My apologies that I could not reply some of your emails yet, I will try to do that in the coming weeks.

  • November 22, 2003
I will probably not be able to answer email or update my site until the end of January 2004. Please come back again by then for new photos of the month and other updates!

  • November 21, 2003
Added the photo of the month October, of anticrepuscular rays.

  • October 15, 2003
I finally had a chance to change the site to a light background. I was planning to do this for a long time, since I got tired of a black background. A light background makes the photos look somewhat better, in my opinion, and black text on white doesn't hurt the eyes as much as white text on black. Also updated the page about myself.

  • October 12, 2003
Added photo of the month, for the months August 2003 and September 2003.

  • September 6, 2003

  • August 14, 2003
Added new photo of the month for July. Lightning once again! The August photo of the month may be of lightning as well, since I have a good one ready. I'll wait for the end of August to post it to see if I get anything more spectacular.

I received a PhD position at NMIMT in New Mexico, and will be studying and improving 3-D lightning mapping techniques to display lightning in thunderstorms. I anticipate to see and document a vast number of optical phenomena, clouds and lightning here in New Mexico.
